The International GPS Global Positioning System Waypoint Registry TM
About US
Here is background information on Waypoint.org. The Idea for a registry of GPS waypoints came to me in 1996. My name is Alan Rifkin Alan@Rifkin.com or Alan@Waypoint.org
I live in the middle of Massachusetts N4216.711 W07229.879
I run the Web site on my own time and money for the fun of being able to find people who have been to interesting places, and to share experiences with them. I would much rather visit a place I know something about, than just dropping in and feeling lost.
The purpose of the registry is to create a place where people can exchange Waypoints for hard to find places they have visited or know about. An additional benefit is that when you contribute a Waypoint you can act as a contact person for the next person who finds it and has additional questions. The development of low cost pocket sized GPS units, has made it possible to find your way around just about anywhere under the sky now, if only you knew where you were going "to." Waypoint is where you go to find the "to"
The Web site was originally started July 6, 1996 at www.Rifkin.com/GPS.htm. I received enough encouragement from people to continue on with the project and a year later on July 9, 1997, I obtained this Domain name and moved the site over to Waypoint.org
I keep adding and fixing the site from the suggestions people send in. So if you have ideas to improve the site or you find an error, please let me know. Without people sending in Waypoints and their suggestions, this site would not be possible. I would like to thank all of those people who have sent in Waypoints and ideas on how to improve the site or correct a typo.
I own a small consulting firm called FAR Laboratories. I have donated all of the web services and hardware used in the running of the site. I am looking for more sponsors to help defray the costs of running Waypoint. If you want to sponsor this site or have fund raising suggestions I can use to support the site, I would be glad to hear from you.
The philosophy behind the design of the site is KIS, Keep It Simple. I try to keep the graphics and navigation to a minimum, just click on the logo to go home. I also like the idea of a Smorgasbord rather then a menu. With a menu, you have to know what you are looking for, but with smorgasbord, you can just look until you find something you like. I do have plans for search engines and smart databases, but those are in the future, due to time and money.
