Lime kiln at Huggins Bay
In the 17 & 1800's stone was a major component in building construction. Massive boulders were held together with a cement made from limestone mixed with certain types of soil and water. Where fire resistance was needed for instance in the sugar mill chimneys molasses was added to the mixture. The most readily available source of lime was from coral rock and this lime kiln dating back to this period is still used today. Lime is however now used as a soil fertilizer and soil ph regulator.
